Every year our Spring Break camp is one where students come yearning and wanting more of God and leave filled and excited to live a life for him. Here is a student testimony of how Mark Camp changed his perception of Christian clubs and brought healing to what was once hurt and broken:
“Hello. My name is James* and I have attended Mira Costa College for 2 years. For the longest time I would not be a part of InterVarsity because of my past experiences with predominantly white, Christian organizations. In elementary, middle school and high school I would go to Christian camps and clubs and they would preach about God and love, but call me a n*gger (literally) to my face and express an intolerance and indifference towards my race like we see so much in American culture today. They were unwilling to change. It was literally a battleground where I had to fight physically and mentally. So because of these experiences, I would not come to InterVarsity. Today, I am here to say that I was sooo wrong. After attending “Mark Camp”, InterVarsity has totally changed my perception of Christian Clubs. They have shown an acceptance of different cultures that I have never seen before in my entire life. I don’t know if you will understand where I’m coming from but this is the first time that, as an African American man, that my concerns have been acknowledged by people other than African Americans instead of just being overlooked and looked down upon. I feel like I belong. InterVarsity has opened up my mind to the possibility of multicultural fellowship. So now, I am determined to go back to Mira Costa and tell my African American friends about my experiences with InterVarsity and also try to get them to experience what I have for themselves.”
